2015 Dith Pran Instagram Photo Shootout Competition

AAJA is proud to announce the 2015 Dith Pran Instagram Photo Shootout Competition to take place at the AAJA National Convention in San Francisco August 12-15, 2015. The theme this year is “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

AAJA is proud to announce the 2015 Dith Pran Instagram Photo Shootout Competition to take place at the AAJA National Convention in San Francisco August 12-15, 2015. The theme this year is “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

Top prize is convention registration for next year’s convention.

Instagram PhotoShootOut Rules:

  • Submit photo entries using the Instagram hashtag #AAJAPhoto. Upload photo submission using any Instagram App.
  • Deadline: Photo submissions must be uploaded on Instagram by 5 p.m. PST on Friday, August 14.
  • Contestants can start shooting anytime beginning Tuesday, August 11.
  • A professional grade camera is not required. Images submitted from mobile devices (cellphone or tablet) are strongly encouraged.
  • Each entrant can submit up to three images. Judging will be based on a single image and not a series of images.
  • Entries should be based on the theme “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” song by singer Tony Bennett. Photos will be judged on theme interpretation, artistic style, composition & technicality. This year’s theme is a suggestion and photographs unrelated to the theme are acceptable.
  • Entrants also need to email aajaphoto@gmail.com with their entrant’s name, Instagram account name, cell phone number, email address and caption information of 100 words or less. Failure to email this information may disqualify an entry.
  • You must be a current registered AAJA National Convention attendee.
  • Only minor burning, dodging and slight color adjustment, sharpening and cropping are acceptable. NO INSTAGRAM FILTERS ALLOWED! Any significantly digitally modified or altered photograph will be disqualified. No special artistic app filers allowed. Exception only is the black and white filter.
  • There is no cost to enter the competition.

All photographs entered will be considered for use during the AAJA Gala Banquet slide show. Winners will be posted on www.AAJAPhoto.org The First Place winner will have their name engraved on the Annual Dith Pran PhotoShootOut perpetual award. First, Second, and Third Place winners will be announced on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the AAJA Gala Scholarship & Awards Banquet. There will be hundreds of dollars in prizes. First place prize includes the convention fee for next year’s convention, a $250 value.

History: The AAJA PhotoShootOut was started in 2000 during the annual AAJA National Convention. The competition was changed in 2008 to honor New York Times photographer Dith Pran, who risked his life in Cambodia during the genocide by the Khmer Rouge to help journalists tell the story of atrocities in his home country. His story inspired the film, “The Killing Fields.” Pran passed away in 2008.

Join New York-based Photojournalist Corky Lee and Filmmaker/Director Curtis Chin (“Vincent Who?”) for an intimate talk about their documentation surrounding the 1982 Vincent Chin Case. Lee will be on hand to discuss his gallery of photographs that are housed at the Chinese American Community Center which documents the movement sparked by the case that brought Asian Americans together in protest. Concluding this event will be Chin’s 2009 documentary film “Vincent Who?” which questions 80 young Asian Americans about a landmark case that has become unnoticed among today’s generation.

Here’s your answer:

Through the generous support of the Ford Foundation, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is pleased to announce the Professional Training Fellowship & Chapter Initiative. With the continued decline in overall representation by journalists of color in America’s newsrooms and the changing industry, the cultural sensitivity, insights and skills of Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) journalists stand to be lost. This initiative will award 2 fellowships to members from each chapter and at-large members, who are journalists currently unemployed, to get digital journalism, managerial and entrepreneurial training in order to thrive in today’s shifting media market.

Fellowship winners will attend the state-of-the-art training available at the 22nd Annual National Convention from August 10-13 in Detroit, MI. The fellowship will cover convention costs which include: convention registration, airfare, and hotel accommodations. Restrictions will apply. Fellows selected are required to blog their experiences for the AAJA website and share training information learned from the convention with their chapters. In addition, all winners must commit to at least two hours of chapter volunteer work as determined by the chapter.

Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet ALL the following requirements:

  • AAJA member for the current year*
  • Affiliated with of one of the 21 AAJA Chapters or a member at-large
  • Committed to AAJA’s mission
  • A journalist currently unemployed

*subject to verification.

How to apply
Eligible applicants must submit the following:

Basic Information
(1) Full Name, (2) Chapter Affiliation, (3) Ethnicity/Race and (4) News Media (newspaper, magazine, television, radio, etc)
Written Essay (500 to 750 words)

Based on your newsroom experience as an AAPI journalist, how would your participation at convention enhance or further the intended objective of this fellowship, and how would you share your experience and knowledge with your chapter (Please be concise and specific as possible).

All selected fellows will be notified by email and posted on AAJA’s main page under headliners by June 15th. A receipt will need to be forwarded to the national office to receive a reimbursement on your travel.

The deadline for early submission is Wednesday, June 1.

Please note: when selecting your print to consider what someone would purchase. Generally celebrity or great feature photos sell well.

Mailing & Print Instructions:
1. Print (IMAGE) must be exactly 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Anything larger than this dimension will need to be cut to fit the frame size. Selected prints will be matted in 16” x 20” frame.
2. Please sign your autograph on the lower right corner of image with a silver metallic pen in dark areas and a black pen in lighter areas. The signature should be 1/2 inch above bottom of print and 1/2″ from right side of the print.
3. Include basic caption information of when and where you took the photo and description of photo on separate paper.
4. Enclose your name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address.
5. Do not send CD or email photo.
6. When mailing and packaging, corrugated card boards are suggested to keep print(s) from bending. Last year some photographers mailed in tubes available at the post office, additional packing materials are available.

We invite you to submit still images and/or video clips for our archives and possible use for convention and future programs. All photos must include permission for use and proper accreditation

Only photos dating only up to 1975

Call for prints for AAJA Silent Auction

Dear AAJA photojournalists,

Can you donate 1-2 photos that are 11×14 size prints for the AAJA Silent Photo Auction in Los Angeles in August. 100 per cent of proceeds go to photo scholarships.

Every year about $5,000 to $8,000 is raised every year from these Silent Photo Auctions that go directly into the pockets of future student photojournalists.

The deadline for submission is Tuesday, June 1.

Printing & Mailing Instruction:
1. Actual image size must be exactly 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Anything larger than this dimension will need to be cut to fit the frame size. Selected prints will be matted in 16” x 20” frame.
2. Please sign your autograph on the lower right corner of image with a silver metallic pen in dark areas and a black pen in lighter areas.
3. Include basic caption information of when and where you took the photo and description of photo on separate paper.
4. Enclose your name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address.
5. Do not send CD or email photo.
6. When mailing and packaging, corrugated cardboards are suggested to keep print(s) from bending. Large mailing tube don’t seem to work that well. Smaller mailing tubes work out best.

Early registration for 2010 Convention ends Friday (April 16)

Dear AAJA photographers, photo students, photo editors,

1. Early registration for the national convention ends on Friday, April 16. After that date, registration will go up between $10 to $75. See chart below.

2. We’re hoping to get a big photo group together for a free dinner cruise on Thursday during the convention. See details below.

3. Please let me know if you are planning to come to the AAJA convention. There are several plans catered just for the AAJA photo community during the convention.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 5 | STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS

Going to the Los Angeles convention? The Port of Long Beach, one of the busiest and most scenic seaports in the world, would like to welcome AAJA Convention attendees with a complimentary cruise of the Long Beach Harbor and dinner. The two-hour tour will offer a unique glimpse into global trade and the port that handles nearly a quarter of all containers moving through West Coast ports. Enjoy the beautiful Long Beach skyline, see the historic Queen Mary and soak in the Southern California summer. Transportation will be provided from and to the convention hotel. The Port of Long Beach is generously donating this cruise but we hope that you will consider a suggested donation of $20 per person which will go towards AAJA-Los Angeles scholarships and programs. The cruise is only available to the first 100 people who RSVP by July 16. All others will be put on a waiting list and will be notified if there are cancellations.
